Then: Mumbai was originally a cluster of seven islands inhabited by fishermen, and named after their goddess Mumbadevi. These islands were a part of Gujarat. Vasco da Gama, a Portuguese was the first man to discover the sea route to Bombay. When development and reclamation started in 1670 onwards, businessmen came from all over to settle. The city expanded rapidly with the development of the cotton trade and the railways in the 1860s. Industries include textiles, engineering, pharmaceuticals, and diamonds. It is also the centre of the Hindi film industry.
